The Beginning:

In 1964 a star was born ---- with SPOTS!!!!
Virginia Daly, a breeder in Michigan, loved to experiment with the new and different in her cats.
Acting on a challenge to create a Abyssinian-pointed Siamese cat, she was breeding Abyssinian to Siamese. She achieved her goal of a ticked tabby pointed cat, but  also in the litter was a little golden kitten with spots. Her daughter said “He looks like an ocelot” and so the first Ocicat “Tonga” came to be. Virginia called her new breed the OciCat (changed to Ocicat when registered with CFA)

Championship in CFA
The Ocicat was accepted by the Cat Fanciers' Association for registration in 1966 and was advanced to championship status in May of 1987. Since that time, through a lot of hard work and dedication, the breed has achieved numerous grand champions, regional winners and national winners since.

Living with an Ocicat!
While wild in appearance, the Ocicat is anything but!  A large, muscular cat with a tight, sleek coat, they require minimal grooming such as a regular brush or shammy. Due to their tight coat, they are not as prone to shedding as many other breeds.
The Ocicat is a proven show winner, but more importantly is a winning companion. Loving, outgoing, playful and affectionate, the Ocicat loves to be around its family and easily adjusts to children, guests and other pets. An Ocicat can get lonely on its own and needs other pets or human companionship to truly bring out its very best. Its laid back and inquisitive nature makes it easy to teach an Ocicat tricks such as fetch or walking on a leash and most truly enjoy travel and hotels!

Colors
There are twelve accepted Ocicat colors divided into eight color classes with all specimens possessing darker spots which appear in deep contrast to a lighter background.
Each hair (except on the tip of tail) has several bands of color. It is where these bands fall together that a thumbprint shaped spot is formed. This powerful, athletic, yet graceful spotted cat is particularly noted for its "wild" appearance.

Ocicats come in three other beautiful patterns as well.

Regardless of the color or pattern of the Ocicat, they all have the wonderful personality that makes them so special.
