CFA Distinguished Merit Ocicats

While there is no dispute that the titles of National Winner (NW), Breed Winner (BW), Regional Winner (RW), Grand Champion (GC) and Grand Premier (GP) are outstanding individual achievements of a single cat, the highly coveted and difficult to obtain title of Distinguished Merit (DM) is the only recognized CFA title which acknowledges the achievements of a breeding program.

A Goal of many, but achievement of few, “DM is earned by a female producing 5 offspring who have earned the titles of GC, GP or DM, or a male producing 15 offspring who have earned these titles. It is CFA’s recognition of a cat who consistently producing top show quality cats.

The first ocicat to earn this title was CH GP Cinnful’s Treasure DM. Bred and Owned by Toni and Steve Kaser, Treasure was in the first litter ever bred by Cinnful Ocicats. A chocolate spotted female, Treasure’s five qualifying offspring included the 1988 CFA Invitational Best Ocicat GC CINNFUL'S SOUTHERN SON and the 1989 CFA Invitational’s Best Ocicat in premiership, GP CINNFUL'S HARTEDIEF

The first male ocicat to earn this title was GC RW Macchiato of Wrentree DM (aka Bud). The beloved companion of Stephanie and Jim Thompson, Bud achieved his recognition of Distinguished Merit on the last weekend of the 1994-95 show season with the granding of GP WRENTREE’S PRACTICAL JOKER (PJ). Bud sired two litters resulting in one litter DM’s for their mother’s, GC TELLTAIL’S JOJO SWEETIE OF MARADOT, DM and CH MARADOT’S INK ADINK ADO, DM. In Sweetie’s litter the grands were 4 girls and 1 boy and in Ink Adink’s litter they were all girls. It is believed that Bud is indeed the only male in CFA to sire 2 litters resulting in one litter DM’s. Bud sired a total of 18 qualifying offspring including a champion daughter who DM’d.

Bud’s best features were probably personality, a very broken pattern without lines or mackerelling, balance, a well defined broad muzzle that did not have pinch and was indeed square, along with his love of the shows. It certainly did not hurt that he slept in bed with his humans until he left to cross the rainbow bridge on May 13, 2002 at almost 15 years of age as an intact non-spraying male.

Bud also was the first ocicat to earn the title of Regional Winner and his children and grand children continue to produce some of our finest show cats.

The first AOV (All Other Variety) ocicat to earn this title was Ocicountry Cinnamon Zande. Zande was a cinnamon classic tabby girl and described as a “true jewel” by her breeder-humans Jerry Katsky and Don Bozeman.

The first F1 (ocicat-abyssinian hybrid) to earn this title was Aldrin’s Irish Coffee of Low Country. Nikki (as she is known to her friends and admirers) also has the honor of being the first tawny female to earn this title. She achieved this title upon the granding of her son GP Low Country Walkin the Dinosaur.
